The Natural Rice Co facility is based in The Northern Rivers of NSW. An area which encompasses the Richmond, Tweed & Clarence Rivers. This region is well known for its beauty with pristine beaches, natural waterways and mountainous surrounds but also serves as thriving hub of agriculture and amazing food culture. The rich fertile soils, high rainfall and the warm sub-tropical climate are the ideal conditions for eco-positive farming to produce the highest quality rice.
At The Natural Rice Co we recognise that the most vital part of our operation is the people who bring it together. Rice growers in the Northern Rivers continue to improve on farm practices that promote positive ecological stewardship. Our rice grower’s commitment to Eco-farmed growing systems ensures that we can produce great quality products whilst continuing to look after the environment.
"We see our growers as pioneers, partnering and believing in our vision to develop a sustainable rice industry in the Northern Rivers Region."
We are proud to boast that all our Australian Dryland Rice is grown, processed, and packaged in the Northern Rivers.
The nature of the Northern Rivers being subject to flooding is why we grow rice here, due to its ability to thrive in waterlogged conditions. The varieties we use are actually the same as grown in the traditional paddy system. Rice doesn’t need to be grown in water, just needs wet soil. But because it can grow in water, the water is used for protecting the young seed head when it’s first developing in the stem from cool night temps. We have warm night temps here so we don’t need the water.
We do not need to irrigate or supplement water to our fields. When compared to traditional rice growing methods we use 65% less water and have reduced our Greenhouse Gas emissions by 85%!
Rice is perfectly safe to eat in moderation if you have diabetes. Brown rice is more highly recommended as it naturally has a lower glycemic index than white rice. Our rice is also naturally gluten free and is safe for celiac and gluten restricted diets.
